At the about 10:30 pm, supposedly 10-15 terrorists attacked PNS Mehran Base. It is speculated that they entered the PNS Mehran from three different sides Dalmiya, Gulistan e Johar and Shahrah e Faisal. People in the nearby location reported firing and hearing 4 blasts, which got the attention of the media. The target of the attacks has been the $40 million Lockheed P-3 C Orion planes and the foreigners working on them. These planes were given to pakistan by the US. A total of 4 out of which 3 were given to PAK Navy and one to PAF. All of these planes operated from this shared base by Navy and PAF. Two of these planes were recently delivered in 2010.
It has been confirmed that terrorists have attacked and destroyed atleast one p-3 C Orion plane. It is also speculated that Four Navy Officials and a foreigner said to be American has been killed. The foreign officials were supposedly working on the plane at the time of attack. The terrorists were heavily armed and fired rockets on the p-3 C plane which got burned. Later security forces including Marines and SSG commandos have been conducting an ongoing operation against the terrorists. Constant fire has been exchanges and grenades being thrown. There seems to be a hostage situation emerging too, where some terrorists have captured part of a building inside the base and holding Navy and foreigners as hostage. It is also reported that 6 terrorists have been killed and three have been captured alive. Earlier Samaa TV reported few Army and rangers personnel leaving the Base suggesting an end to the operation. But later firing shots were again heard from inside the base.
It is important to note that this is one of the many attacks carried out this week against the PNS. Which seems to indicate that some sort of group is specifically targeting Pak-Navy people and resources in Karachi, probably because it is an easier target as PAF or Army.
